Two trains A and B have lengths 800m and 1000m respectively and are moving with the velocity of 25m/s and 15m/s respectively. At time t=0, engine of train A is just behind tail of train B. Find the time when train A completely overtake train B?

Solution
The correct option is D180sec At t=0
Head of train A is just behind the tail of train B as shown below.
And at t=to[A overtakes B]
Head of train B is just behind the tail of train A.
From the two situation we see that in time to relative displacement of train A w.r.t train B is
sAB=800+1000=+1800m
Relative velocity of train A w.r.t train B is given by
vAB=vA−vB=+25−(+15)
⇒vAB=+10m/s
As vA and vB are constant, so relative acceleration will be zero.
∴aAB=aA−aB=0
Therefore, time taken to overtake the train B will be
to=sABvAB=180010
∴to=180seconds
Hence, option (d) is correct.
Why this question?When relative acceleration is zero then,Relative velocity=Relativedisplacementtimetaken
