Two trains A and B have lengths 800 m and 1000 m respectively and are moving with the velocity of 25 m/s and 15 m/s respectively. At time t=0, engine of train A is just behind tail of train B. Find the time when train A completely overtake train B ?

The correct option is D 180 sec
At t=0

Head of train A is just behind the tail of train B as shown below.


And at t=to [A overtakes B]

Head of train B is just behind the tail of train A.


From the two situation we see that in time to relative displacement of train A w.r.t train B is

sAB=800+1000=+1800 m

Relative velocity of train A w.r.t train B is given by

vAB=vAvB=+25(+15)

vAB=+10 m/s

As vA and vB are constant, so relative acceleration will be zero.

aAB=aAaB=0

Therefore, time taken to overtake the train B will be

to=sABvAB=180010

to=180 seconds

Hence, option (d) is correct.
