Question

Two vertices of a triangle are (-1,4) and (5,2). If the centroid is (0,-3) then find the third vertex.

Open in App
Solution

Finding the third vertex of the triangle:

Let A(x1,y1)be the first vertex of a triangle having coordinates(-1,4), B(x2,y2)be the second vertex of a triangle having coordinates (5,2) and

C be the third vertex of a triangle having coordinates x3,y3

The coordinates of the centroid of the triangle =xI+x2+x33,y1+y2+y33

Therefore, 0,-3=-1+5+x33,4+2+y33

Equating x and y-coordinates on both sides,

0=4+x33 and -3=6+y33

-4=x3 and -9-6=y3

-15=y3

Hence, the coordinates of the third vertex Cx3,y3 are(-4,-15).
