Question

Two waves are described by y1=0.30sin[π(5x200)t] and y2=0.30sin[π(5x200t)+π/3] where y1y2 and x are in meters and t is in seconds. When these two waves are combined, a travelling wave is produced. What are the (a) amplitude, (b) wave speed, and (c) wave length of that travelling wave?

Solution

The correct option is C 0.52m,40m/s,0.40m
y1=0.3[π(5x200t)] and y2=0.3sin[π(5x200t)+π/3]

sinα+sin(α+β)=2sin(α+β/2)cosβ2

Hence y=y1+y2=0.6sin[π(5x200t)+π/6]cosπ6

y=0.33sin[π(5x200t)+π/6]

Amplitude A=0.33=0.52m

v=ωk=200π5π=40m/s

λ=2πk=2π5π=0.4m
