Two waves are passing simultaneously through a string.
The equation of the waves are given by,
y1=A1sink(xvt)
and y2=A2sink(xvt+x0)
Where the wave number k=6.28 cm1 and x0=1.50 cm The amplitudes are A1=5.0 mm and A2=4.0 mm. Find the phase difference between the waves and the amplitude of the resulting wave.

The correct option is B 3π and 1 mm
The phase constant of the first wave is k(xvt) and of the second wave is k(xvt+x0).

The phase difference between the waves is,
Δϕ=kx0=(6.28 cm1)(1.50 cm)
Δϕ=2π×1.5=3π
The wave satisfy the condition of destructive interference, as the phase difference is an odd multiple of π.
The amplitude of the resulting wave is given by
|A1A2|=5.0 mm4.0 mm=1.0 mm
