Question

Two waves are propagating to the point P along a straight line produced by two sources A and B which are simple harmonic in nature and of equal frequency. The amplitude of every wave at P is a and the phase of A is π3 ahead that of B and the distance AP is greater than BP by 50 cm. Then, the resultant amplitude at that point P will be xa (wavelength is 1 meter) then the value of x is

Solution

Path difference
Δx=50cm=12m
Aa=Ab=a
λ=1m
Δϕ=2πλ×Δx = Phase difference
Δϕ=2π1×12=π
Total Phase difference =ππ3=2π3
Resultant amplitude
R=a2+a2+2a2cos2π3
=2a2+2a2(12)
=2a2a2=a2=a
