Question

Two waves of light in air have the same wavelength and are initially in the same phase. They then travel through plastic layers with thicknesses of L1=3.5 mm and L2=5.0 mm and indices of refraction n1=1.7 and n2=1.25 as shown in the figure. The rays later arrive at a common point. The longest wavelength of light for which constructive interference occurs at the point is

Solution

The correct option is B 1.2 mm
Let Δx be the path difference between the two light waves

Δx=[n1L1L1][n2L2L2]

Δϕ= phase difference between two waves

For longest wavelengths, Δϕ is the smallest.

Δϕmin=2πλmaxΔx

For constructive interference, Δϕmin=2π

Δx=λmax

λmax=n1L1n2L2+(L2L1)

=(1.7)(3.5×103)(1.25)(5.0×103)+(5.03.5)×103

=(5.956.25+1.5)×103=1.2×103 m

λmax=1.2 mm

Hence, option (B) is correct.
