Leptotene is the first stage of prophase I of meiosis. During this stage, individual chromosomes begin to condense into long strands within the nucleus. This is when the chromosomes first become visible. The threadlike chromosomes are called chromatonemata. Then the two chromatids are joined together at the centromere. At this stage, the telomeres of the chromosomes are turned toward, and mostly attached to the same region of the nuclear envelope. Meiosis specific proteins namely U-proteins and R-proteins help with the joining of chromatids during the leptotene stage.
