Question

Ultraviolet light of wavelength 2271 from a 100W mercury source irradiates a photo-cell made of molybdenum metal. If the stopping potential is 1.3V, estimate the work function of the metal. How would the photo-cell respond to a high intensity (105Wm2) red light of wavelength 6328 produced by a He-Ne laser?

Solution

Given that,

λ=2271˙A

V0=1.3V

so,

W=hνeV0

=hcλeV0

=6.6×1034×3×1082271×10101.6×1019×1.3

=6.64×10191.6×1019

=4.15eV

Let ν0is the threshold wavelength of metal. So,

ν0=Wh

=6.64×10196.6×1034

=1.006×1015Hz

Wavelength of red light is

λr=6328˙A=6328×1010m

νr=cλr

νr=3×1086328×1010

=4.74×1014Hz

Since, ν0νr, so photocell would respond.
