Question

Ultraviolet radiations can be detected using___________.

Open in App
Solution

Ultraviolet radiation:

  1. The sun and some artificial sources, such as arc welders and solariums, produce ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
  2. Skin cancer is mostly caused by ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Sunburn, tanning, accelerated aging, and eye damage can all result from too much UV exposure.
  3. The wavelength range of the UV radiation is 100-400nm.

Fluorescence:

  1. The fluorescent material takes on a distinct color when the absorbed radiation is in the ultraviolet area of the spectrum, which is invisible to the human eye, and the released light is in the visible region.
  2. Unlike phosphorescent materials, which continue to emit light after the radiation source has been switched off for some time, fluorescent materials quit glowing nearly instantaneously after the radiation source has been turned off.

An illustrative diagram of the electromagnetic spectrum is shown below.
