Under electrostatic conditions, the electric field inside a conductor
is zero
The electric field inside a conductor under electrostatic conditions is always zero, otherwise (one argument could be) the free e- would feel a constant force inside it and would keep drifting perpetually. This would result in an electric current (i.e., energy) out of nothing which is against the law of conservation of energy. Alternatively thinking, the electrostatic condition is maintained because there is no electric field inside. If there were electric field, charges won't be static and we won't be having this discussion :P
