Solution

  • Ethanol (CH3CH2OH) is a hydrocarbon in which two Carbon (C) atoms are present and the functional group is Hydroxyl group (-OH).
  • We can convert Ethanol to Ethene (CH2=CH2) by treating the Ethanol with Concentrated Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) at a temperature of 443K.
  • So, the condition for the Ethanol to react with Sulphuric acid to produce the colorless gas Ethene is the temperature should be 443K.
  • The chemical reaction is given below:

CH3CH2OHEthanol(l)443Kconc.H2SO4CH2=CH2(g)Ethene+H2O(l)Water

  • The above reaction is also known as Dehydration reaction.
