1. German unification was led by Otto von Bismarck, who was the chancellor Prussia.
2. To unify Germany, he first allied with Austria and won Schelswig and Holstein by defeating Denmark in 1866.
3. Bismarck then launched the Seven weeks war against Austria in 1867 to win control over all of northern Germany.
4. The final step was the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71 through which Bismarck won control over southern Germany.
5. In 1871, the Prussia king Wilhelm I was declared emperor of a unified Germany.
