Originally known as Ramachandra Pandurang Tope,he was one of the most outstanding leaders ofIndia’s First War of Independence in 1857.
He was a Maratha Brahman in the service of the former Peshwa ruler of the Maratha confederacy, Baji Rao and his adopted son Nana Sahib.
In 1851, when Lord Dalhousie deprived Nana Saheb of his father's pension, Tatya Tope along with Nana Saheb became a sworn enemy of the British.
In 1857, he led a revolt against British forces along with Jhansi ki Rani and Nana Sahib and gave his important contribution in the First War of Independence (1857-58).
However, he was captured by the British Forces in April 1859.
After a hurried trial for waging war against the East India Company , he was hanged to death on 18 April 1859 at Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh by BritishForces.
