Unripe apples ripen faster when kept with the already ripe ones.Why does this happen?

Ethylene is a gaseous phytohormone which is produced in the fruits and cause their ripening. The gas diffuses from the ripe fruits (for example apples, as mentioned here) to the unripe ones and thus cause their ripening too.
