(a) HUMUS: The rotting dead matter in the soil is called humus. It is formed by the action of microorganisms on the dead and decaying matter present in the soil. It increases the fertility of the soil.

(c) HORIZON: Each layer in the soil profile has a different texture, colour, chemical composition and dept. These layers are referred to as horizons.
