Solution

Newland arranged the elements in increasing order of their atomic mass and observed that every eighth element beginning from any element resembles the first element in its physical and chemical properties. This was known as the law of octaves. This method was discarded as it failed to accommodate the heavier elements. It was found that the rule was only followed till calcium.
