We can write: $(96)^{2}$ = $(100 - 4)^{2}$
$\Rightarrow$ $(100 - 4)^{2}$ = $100^{2} - 2 (100) (4) + 4^{2} =$ $10000 - 800 + 16$ $= 9216$
Hence the answer is $9216$
