Question

Use Bohr’s atomic model and Bohr-Bury scheme to complete the following table.

Valence shell Number of electrons in the valence shell Total electrons in the atom
L 2
15

Open in App
Solution

(i) Valence shell = L
Value of “n” for L shell = 2
Total number of electrons in the atom = Electron in K shell + Electrons in L shell.
Since the number of electrons in:
K shell = 2×12 = 2
L shell = 2
Therefore, the total number of electrons in the atom = 2 + 2 = 4

(ii) Total electrons in the atom is 15.
So, the electronic configuration of the atom = 2, 8, 5
Since the number of shells is 3, so the valence shell = M
We can get the number of electrons in the valence shell from the electronic configuration (2, 8, 5).
Therefore, the number of valence electrons = 5.
