Question

Use information * Stronger inter molecular forces result in higher boiling point . *Strength of London force forces increases with number of electrons in a molecule . * Boiling point of HF, HCl, HBr, HI are 293 K, 189 K, 206 K and 238 K respectively.
Q-Looking at the trend of boiling points of HCl , HBr and HI , explain out of dipole-dipole interaction and London interaction , which one is prominent ?

Solution

Dear Student,

Out of the two forces, dipole-dipole interaction is predominant in case of HF. F is an highly electronegative element and forms hydrogen bond. Therefore. due to intermolecular hydrogen bond which is a dipole-dipole interaction, between the molecules of HF, its boiling point increases.
Although, the general trend is followed later on i.e. London forces predominate when we move down the group.
So, except for HF, London-London forces predominate and the order is HF >HI > HBr > HCl.
