Question

Use number line and add the following integers:

(–2) + 8 + (–4)

Open in App
Solution

As per the question, we have to find the value of (-2) + 8 + (-4)

(-2) + 8 + (-4) = -2 + 8 - 4 = (-2 + 8) - 4

To calculate the value we will follow the steps as follows:

(i) Draw a number line

(ii) Start from the point (-2). Move 8 units to the right of (-2) on the number line(to calculate (-2 + 8)).

(iii) We reach the point 6. So, (-2 + 8 = 6). So, (-2) + 8 + (-4) = -2 + 8 - 4 = (-2 + 8) - 4 = 6 - 4

(iv) We move 4 units to the left of 6 on the number line(to calculate (6 -4)). We reach the point 2.

Hence, (-2) + 8 + (-4) = 2.
