Use of antihistamines and steroids gives quick relief from
allergy
An allergic reaction occurs when the immune system attacks a usually harmless substance called an allergen that gains access to the body. The IgE antibodies fight the invading allergic substances or allergens. Specialized cells called mast cells also participate in the allergic reaction. Mast cells release a variety of inflammatory chemicals into the tissues and blood, one of which is known as histamine. These chemicals frequently cause allergic reactions. Antihistamines prevent symptoms such as hives by blocking histamine receptors so that the body doesn’t react to the allergens. Swelling, redness, and itching may be reduced with ice and topical creams that contain steroids.
