The detergents are hazardous since they reduce the oxygen content available for the aquatic life. Especially, the phosphates in the detergents cause rapid growth of algae (algal bloom). These algae die and decompose, during this process a lot of oxygen is consumed leading to the reduction of dissolved oxygen that is necessary for the aquatic life.
