Solution

The correct option is A No sooner did we reach home, than the phone rang.
There are two different events. The first event is : 'We reached home'. And the second event ('the phone rang') happens immediately after the first (Note the use of the phrase, 'at that moment'). The structure 'No sooner... than' is used in such cases of two different events. And the second event happening immediately after the first event.
Let us see, how this structure is used: 'No sooner' is immediately followed by either the word 'had' (in past perfect sentences) or 'did'. Hence, Option B is the correct answer.
Option A: 'Not only' is used to stress when two events occurred and both the events had the same/ similar effect. However, in this case, the two events are different. Hence, this is incorrect.
Option C : As per the given question, the phone rang at the moment when they reached home. However, this sentence communicates that the phone rang before they reached home. As it conveys a different meaning, this option is incorrect.
Option D is incorrect as it conveys the meaning that the phone rang because 'we reached home' i.e. As if the first event was the cause of the second event. This is incorrect.
