Question

Use the formula to expand:

(5) (4x + y)3

Open in App
Solution

We know that (a + b)3 = a3 + 3a2b + 3ab2 +b3
Comparing (4x + y)3 with (a + b)3 , we get:
a = 4x and b = y
Substituting these in the above formul:
(4x + y)2 = (4x)3 + 3 × (4x)2 × y + 3 × 4x × (y)2 + (y)3
= 64x3 + 48x2y + 12xy2 + y3
