Question

Use the formula to expand the following:

(8) (am − bn)3

Open in App
Solution

We know that (x − y)3 = x3 − 3x2y + 3xy2 − y3.
Comparing (am − bn)3 with (x − y)3, we get:
x = am and y = bn
Substituting these in the above formula:
(am − bn)3 = (am)3 − 3 × (am)2 × bn + 3 × am × (bn)2 − (bn)3
= a3m3 − 3a2bm2n + 3ab2mn2 − b3n3
