Question

Use the table to write a linear function that relates y to x.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Find the slope of the line using the points.

From the above table Ordered pairs are (-8,2),(-4,1),(0,0),(4,-1).

We know, slope of the line, m=changeinychangeinx=y2-y1x2-x1

Now using the two points (0,0),(4,-1), here x1=0,x2=4 and y1=0,y2=-1

m=-1-04-0=-14=-14

Step 2: Finding the linear function that relates y to x.

We know, Linear function: y=mx+c

y=-14x+c m=-14

0=-14×0+c (Putting y=0 and x=0 i.e.,(0,0))

0=0+c0=cc=0

Now again put c=0 in linear function,

y=-14x+0

Hence, Linear function would be y=-14x.
