Question

Using the Sonar, sound pulses are emitted at the surface of water. These pubs after being reflected from the bottom are deducted. If the time interval from the emission to the detection of sound pulses is 8 second, find the depth of water :

Solution

The correct option is B 5992 m
Let d be the distance of bottom from the sonar . Therefore total distance covered by sound to go to bottom and come back to sonar after reflection from bottom , =2d ,
given , velocity of sound in water v=340m/s and time taken by pulses to cover the distance of 2d , t=8s ,
we have , distance=speed×time ,
2d=v×t=1498×8 ,
or d=1498×8/2=5992m
