Question

Value of dissociation constant of acetic acid is 106, where as dissociation constant of formic acid is 105. Which of the following will be the value of pKa(acetic acid) - pKa(formic acid)
a)10
b)1
c)101
d)-1

Solution

The dissociation constant is Ka and pKa stands for a negative log of Ka. We will now Calculate the pKa of acetic acid and formic acid.

Acetic acid:
Ka = 106
pKa= -log(Ka)= -log(106) = 6
Formic acid:
Ka=105
pKa=log(Ka)=log(105) =5
The value of pKa(acetic acid) - pKa(formic acid) = 6 - 5 = 1.
Therefore, the correct answer is an option (B).
