Question

Vapour pressure of pure benzene at any temperature is 640mm Hg. A non volatile, non-electrolyte solid whose weight is 2.75gm, is added to 39.0gm of benzene. Vapour pressure of solution is 600mm Hg. Calculate the molecular weight of the solid?

Solution

Let M g/mol be the molecular weight of the solid. The number of moles of solid
=2.75gMg/mol=2.75Mmol
The molecular weight of benzene is 78 g/mol. The number of moles of benzene
=39.0g78g/mol=0.5mol.
The mole fraction of the solid
=2.75M2.75M+0.52.75M0.5=5.5M
The relative lowering of vapour pressure of solution is equal to the mole
fraction of solute.
P0PP0=X
640600640=5.5M
40640=5.5M
M=640×5.540
M=88 g/mol.
The molecular weight of the solid is 88 g/mol.
