Given:
$x^{2} + 3 x - 4 = 0$
Solving this quadratic equation by factorisation, we get
$(x + 4) (x - 1) = 0$
$\Rightarrow x = - 4$ or $x = 1$

Hence $1$ is the root of the given equation.
