Solution

Rutherford's alpha particle scattering experiment

When Rutherford bombarded alpha particles on a gold foil, he observed that most of the alpha particle goes in straight path, some were deflected through small angle, and 1 in 10,000 was reflected back along the same path which proves that-

  • most of the part of atom is empty.
  • Nucleus is very- very small due to which only 1 in 10,000 (approximately) was reflected back along the same path.
  • Very few alpha particles retraced their path because Nucleus is very- very small .
