The embryos of all vertebrates at an early stage show more or less the same structure. Embryos of all vertebrates develop notochord and gill-clefts. Notochord is partly or fully replaced by vertebral column in the adults of all vertebrates. This similarity in embryonic development indicates evolution of vertebrates from a common ancestor.
