In 1869, Belgian King Leopold II sent HM Stanley secretly to scout the Congo region. Stanley went around the region and made the African leaders sign treaties and agreements to hand over their lands to him, on behalf of the Belgian king. When the king of Katanga refused, Stanley killed him and got his land. By 1882, Leopold’s territories grew up to 2,300,000 square miles and this area was called the Congo Free State and was personally owned by King Leopold.
