Waste water is treated in sewage treatment plants biologically by using flocs (masses of bacteria associated with fungal filaments) which consume the organic matter in waste water.
Once the BOD is reduced, the water is allowed to settle in a settling tank and the flocs sediment. This sediment is referred to as activated sludge. This is pumped into large tanks called anaerobic sludge digesters. Here anaerobic bacteria digest flocs and in this process produce methane, hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide. These form biogas which can be used for a variety of purposes.
