Polar compounds


Polar compounds are compounds having a partial electrical charge separation within the molecule. Water, ammonia etc are examples of polar compounds.

In water, oxygen atom with a high electronegativity attracts the shared pair of electrons towards its nucleus. As a result, oxygen develops a partial negative charge and hydrogen atom develops a partial positive charge. Hence water compound is called a polar compound.
