Question

Water can be classified as which among the given compounds?

  1. Ionic compounds

  2. Polar compounds

  3. Covalent compounds

  4. Coordinate compounds

Solution

The correct option is B

Polar compounds

Polar compounds are compounds having a partial electrical charge separation within the molecule. Water, ammonia etc are examples of polar compounds.

In water, oxygen atom with a high electronegativity attracts the shared pair of electrons towards its nucleus. As a result, oxygen develops a partial negative charge and hydrogen atom develops a partial positive charge.  Hence water compound is called a polar compound.
