Water cannot be used as fire extinguisher to put out –
Burning wood
Burning oil
Burning cloth
Burning charcoal
As water is heavier than oil, therefore, it slips down permitting the oil to rise to the surface and continue to burn.
If the clothes of a person working in the kitchen catch fire, then to extinguish the fire :
(a) sand should be thrown over the burning clothes
(b) water should be thrown over the burning clothes
(c) polyester blanket should be used to cover the burning clothes
(d) woollen blanket should be used to cover the burning clothes
Why are fires produced by burning oil not extinguished by pouring water ?
