Question

Water flows through a cylindrical pipe of internal diameter 7cm at 5m per sec. Calculate
(i) the volume in litres of water discharged by the pipe in one minute.
(ii) the time in minutes, the pipe would take to fill an empty rectangular tank of size 4m×3m×2.31m .

Solution

Given,
Speed of water flows through cylindrical pipe =5 m/sec
Internal diameter of the pipe =7cm
So, radius (r)=7.2cm

Now, length of water flow in 1 minutes (h)=5×60=300m
Volume of water =πr2h=227×72×72×300×100 cm3=1155000 cm3=1155 litres

(i) the volume of water =1155000cm3
Volume of rectangular tank of size =4m×3m×2.31m=27.72m3
Also, given speed of water 4 m/sec
Radius of pipe =72 cm
Volume of water in 1sec=227×72×72×5×100 cm3=19250 cm3
Hence
(ii) Time taken to empty the tank =27.72m319250=(2772×100×100×100)(100×19250)=1440 sec=144060=24 minutes
