Question

Water in a canal 30 dm wide and 12 dm deep, is flowing with a velocity of 100 km per hour. How much area will it irrigate in 30 minutes if 8 cm of standing water is desired?

Open in App
Solution

Width of canal (b) = 30 dm =3 m

Depth (h) = 12 dm =1.2 m

Speed of water = 100 km/hr

Length of water flow in 30 minutes = 12hr

=100×10002=50000 m

Volume of water = lbh=3×1.2×50000m3

Depth of water in the field = 8100m

Area of field = Volume of waterDepth of water

=3×1.2×500008100

=3×12×50000×10010×8=9×250000

=2250000 m2

It will irrigate 2250000 m2 in 30 minutes if 8 cm of standing water is desired
