Question

Water in a canal, 5.4m wide and 1.8m deep, is flowing with a speed of 25km/hour. How much area can it irrigate in 40minutes, if 10cm of standing water is required for irrigation

Solution

Step 1:Finding the volume of canal

We have,

Breadth of the canal=5.4m

Depth/height of the canal=1.8m

Speed of water flowing in a canal=25km/h

Length of canal in 1hour=25km

Length of canal in 40minutes=40×2560=503km=50003m

Volumeofcanal=l×b×h=5.4×1.8×50003m3

Step 2: Finding the area to be irrigated

Now,

Volumeofwaterincanal=Volumeofareatobeirrigated5.4×1.8×50003=Areairrigated×height16200=Areairrigated×10100[Since1m=100cm]Areairrigated=16200×10010Areairrigated=1620000m2=162hectares[Since1hectare=10000m2]

Hence, it will irrigate 162hectaresor1620000m2 area in 40minutes.
