Question

Water is a liquid and hydrogen sulphide is a gas, although the molecular mass of hydrogen sulphide is almost double that of water. Explain.

Solution

The mass of H2 S is double than that of water but H2O is liquid and H2 S is gas.

In H2O, there are Hydrogen bonds present because of Oxygen's small size and high electronegativity. So as
Water has Hydrogen bonds which leads to stronger forces of attraction so it is in liquid state.

Hydrogen sulphide tras no hydrogen bonds and stays in gaseous state.
