Question

Water is filled in a rectangular tank of size 3m×2m×1m..
(a) Find the total force exerted by the water on the bottom surface of the tank.
(b) Consider a vertical side of area 2m×1 m. Take a horizontal strip of width δx meter in this side, situated at a depth of x meter from the surface of the water. Find the force by the water on this strip.
(c) Find the torque of the force calculated in part (b) about the bottom edge of this side.
(d) Find the total force by the water on this side.
(e) Find the total torque by the water on the side about the bottom edge. Neglect the atmospheric pressure and take g=10ms2.

Solution

Force on bottom
FB=Pressure×Area
FB=(ρg h+ρ0)(l w)
FB=(103×10×1+10)(2×3)
FB=6×104N
Here, atmospheric pressure (ρ0) is neglected
(b) Force on strip
df=Pressure×Area
df=(ρgx)[2 dx]
df=2×104(x d)
(d) Torque about AB
dt=df(1x)
t=I0dt=I02104×(110)dx
t=2×104(xx2)dx
=2×104[x22x33]I0
=2104×16=3.33×103Nm
() torque about the force on (b) point is simply dt=df(1)
dt=2×104×(1)dx
dt=2×104[xx2].dx
