We know that, velocity of efflux of water, v=√2gh ⇒v=√2g(4−x) ..........(1) [ from figure ] Considering the vertical motion of water, x=12gt2 t=√2xg ..........(2) [ time taken by water to reach ground ] Horizontal range of water, R=vt ⇒R=√2g(4−x)×√2xg [ from (1) and (2) ] ⇒R=√16x−4x2 Now, dRdx=12(16x−4x2)−12.(16−8x) For maximum range, dRdx=0 ⇒16−8x2×√(16x−4x2)=0 [x≠0 and x≠4 as denominator cannot be equal to zero ] ⇒16−8x=0 ⇒x=2m
