Let us suppose, height of the hole from the ground is x.
According to question -


We know that, velocity of efflux of water, v=2gh
v=2g(4x) ..........(1)
[ from figure ]
Considering the vertical motion of water,
x=12gt2
t=2xg ..........(2)
[ time taken by water to reach ground ]
Horizontal range of water, R=vt
R=2g(4x)×2xg
[ from (1) and (2) ]
R=16x4x2
Now, dRdx=12(16x4x2)12.(168x)
For maximum range, dRdx=0
168x2×(16x4x2)=0
[ x0 and x4 as denominator cannot be equal to zero ]
168x=0
x=2 m
