Question

Water is filled in a uniform container of area of cross section A. A hole of cross section area a(«A) is made in the container at a height of 20 m above the base. Water streams out and hits a small block on surface at some distance from the container. The block is moved on the surface in such a way that the stream always hits the block. The initial velocity of the block (in m/s) is (Given aA=120; Take g=10 ms2) (answer upto two decimal places)

Solution

Velocity of efflux
v=2gy
Rangc x=2gy×2hg
The velocity of the block must be (dxdt)
vb=2hg×2g×12ydydt
vb=hydydt ... (i)
Using equation of continuity,
Adydt=a2gy ...(ii)
From (i) and (ii),
vb=hy×aA2gy=2ghaA=20×120
=1 m/s
