Question

Water shows capillary action in a narrow glass tube. Give appropriate reasons.

Solution

Capillary action:

1.The movement of liquid observed in narrow spaces in the direction or opposite to external force such as gravity without any assistance is capillary action.

2. This movement of water through glass tube is because of cohesive and adhesive forces.

3.Cohesive forces are the forces observed between two similar substances where adhesive forces are the forces between different substances.

4.Water possess cohesive forces between the water molecules due to the presence of H-bond and adhesive forces exist between water and glass surface which helps in sticking to the glass surface.

5.Capillary movement of liquid takes place readily when the adhesive forces are stronger than cohesive forces and the diameter of the capillary has to be small and the surface tension of liquid as well as the adhesive forces lift the liquid up.
