we can hear the sound of an approaching train when we put our ears on a railway track, even when the train is far off but its sound cannot be hard through the air . is this statement true? justify your answer.

Yes this statement is true.
It is because sound travels faster in solids than in gases. So sound of an approaching train can be heard through putting ear on railways track as railways tracks are made up of metal that is solids but can not be heard through sir that is gas.
