Question

We know, H=I2Rt and also H=V2t/R. In the first case, H is directly proportional to R and in the second case, H is inversely proportional to R. What is the actual thing?

Solution

When we check proportionality we keep other terms constant. In the equation H=I²RT, if we keep I and T constant then H is directly proportional to R and this formula is applicable for series combination because I is constant in Series combination. Similarly, H=V²t/R , if V and t are const. Then H is inversely proportional to R for parallel combination as V is constant for parallel combination
