We need to emphasis here that the water splitting complex is associated with the PS II. which itself is physically located on the inner side of the membrance of the thylakoid. Then, where are the protons and O2 formed likely to be released- in the lumen?or on the outer side of the membrane?

Splitting of water molecules in presence of light, in the lumen of the thylakoid, releases the protons, electrons, and oxygen is called Photolysis of water. It takes place in presence of water splitting complex. It is present on the innerside of the thylakoid membrane.
